The first shipment of 100,000 litres of nano nitrogen liquid fertiliser imported from India has arrived in the country and is to be distributed among farmers in Ampara, Trincomalee and Batticaloa today, the Agriculture Ministry said.
Agriculture Ministry Secretary Prof. Udith Jayasinghe said about 500,000 litres are expected to arrive this week. The country plans to import 3.1 million litres of the fertilizer for the upcoming Maha season.
The liquid fertilizer stock that arrived in a special cargo flight chartered by Sri Lankan Airlines from Hyderabad International Airport is stored at the warehouse of Colombo Commercial Fertilizers prior to distribution.
The Ministry Secretary said the fertilizer has been produced using nano technology by the IFFCO - Nano Biotechnology Research Center in India and is used for organic agriculture.
