Although the rains have come to a temporary halt, the flood threat continues in Matara while the numbers affected by the flood have increased.
The District Secretary of Matara Y. Wickramasiri told Times Online that the Matara experienced clear skies today. However, he said that 23,103 individuals of 6012 families have been displaced while 11,692 individuals have been stranded. 390 houses have suffered minor consequences while two houses have been affected majorly.
Furthermore, more than 2500 families have been displaced in the areas of Malimbada, Akurassa, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Atthuduwa, Matara Fort and Gal Bamma.
The Sri Lanka Army along with the Navy and disaster relief teams have taken measures to rescue stranded, working towards providing immediate assistance to victims under the supervision of the Army Commander General Vikum Liyanage.
Arrangements have been made for medical attention to be provided and to call the diving teams of the Sri Lanka Army Special Forces and Commandos for the operations at a short notice given the unpredictable nature of the flood.
According to residents, the water levels have remained for 10 consecutive days, and are not receding.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
