The former Mayor for Kurungala Thushara Sanjeewa and four others were sentenced for a three year Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) each after finding them guilty for the demolition of the Raja Sabha Mandapaya (Royal Assembly Hall) of King Buwanekabahu in Kurunegala.
The sentence was given by Kurunegala High Court Judge Lal Bandara Ranasinghe.
They were also ordered to pay damages to the value of Rs 13.5 million and the failure to pay would result in an additional six month jail term each.
All the concivted individuals were ordered to pay a fine of Rs 125,000 each as well. If they fail to pay the fine a further six months would be added to the jail term.
The others sentenced were former Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Nishantha Tilakaratne, former Engineer of the Municipal Chaminda Bandara Adhikari, Overseer Illaludeen Zulfikar .and the Backhoe operator Lakshman Priyantha.
The AG had indicted them on five charges for which they pleaded guilty.
Deputy Solicitor General Madhawa Tennakoon today filed an amended indictment by filing charges under the Penal code instead of the Public Property Act.
