The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved a proposal to declare April 6 as National Sports Day marking late Sri Lankan Olympic medal winner Duncan white who won the silver medal for 400 meter hurdles at Summer Olympic festival on this day in 1948.
Earlier the Cabinet on July 14, 2014 decided to declare April 6 but the importance of the day was not much recognized by the citizens due to the festive psychosis followed by the preparation of the new year, the Cabinet memorandum said.
"Since the athletes, as well as the entire community, should be made aware of sports activities, while a love for sports should be developed across the country by declaring a sports day, various groups related to the sports arena have pointed out the requirement of declaration of a respective and appropriate day as the National Sports Day," the Memorandum noted.
