The gunman responsible for the murder of a former Assistant Superintendent of Prisons arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport while trying to flee the country has been detained for a seven day period for questioning.
Balapitiya Acting Magistrate Sanjaya Kodithuwakku granted permission to the Police to detain him and question him over the killing of the ex-prison officer on March 13, 2025 at Akmeemana.
The suspect is reported to be involved in at least 11 other murders.
The 29 year old suspect was trying to flee the country to Thailand using a forged passport when he was detected by the Criminal Investigations Department at the Airport.
Police team investigating the murder of the ex-prison official had gathered a photograph of the suspected gunman and handed it over to the Crime Record Division who in turn had handed it over to the CID at the Airport enabling them to arrest him.
