A motion to remove Mr Janaka Ratnayake, the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission Sri Lanka (PUCSL) from his post was passed in parliament today with a majority of 46 votes.
One hundred and twenty three members agreed with the removal of the Chairman, while 77 members voted against the motion, speaker of the Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced.
The Tamil National Alliance party members were absent for the vote..
The motion for the debate was proposed by Minister Susil Premajayantha.
Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekara commenced the debate presenting several allegations against the Chairman including the failure to grant approval to increase the electricity tariff at the right time and disregarding the opinions of the commission’s members among others..
