Namal Rajapaksa has been named as the National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) replacing his uncle Basil Rajapaksa who stepped down from the post earlier.
The appointment was made when the Executive Committee of the SLPP met at the residence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today evening.
The SLPP during its convention held in December refrained from filling the post though Mr Basil Rajapaksa had stepped down from the post.
However they created a new position in the party as Deputy National Organizer.
There was speculation at that time that Mr Basil Rajapaksa would be reappointed to the post after he returned to the country. However he has not taken up the post again thereby enabling his nephew to take up the post.
