News

A modern seafood processing plant was inaugurated yesterday (2) by the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda and State Minister for Fisheries Piyal Nishantha at Arali Road in Jaffna

The factory; 'Suganth Sea Food Private Limited' is under Mr. Sugathasilan Aravindan who holds the position of Managing Director.

This factory specializes in the export of sea urchins and is one of the most modern seafood processing plants in the South Asian region, according to Mr. Aravindan.

Minister Douglas Devananda said that Mr. Aravindan has given a new look and new energy to the business of exporting seafood, which was started by his father, the late Suganthaseelan.

"At a time when the country is economically backward, the Fisheries Ministry will continue to give maximum support to this important business because the seafood factory will provide employment opportunities in the north and dollars to the country," Minister Devananda said.

According to State Minister Piyal Nishantha, this is the most modern and the only sea urchin processing factory in Sri Lanka, and they will not hesitate to encourage such industries because they will be able to boost the country's economy while strengthening the economy of the fishing community in the north.

In addition to the factory 30 acres of sea farms owned by the 'Suganthan Sea Farm' company in Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts' Kakathiv, Iranativ, and Nachchikuda areas while more than 400 acres of land is currently under the permission and guidance of the National Aquaculture Development Authority by involving families in those areas.
