A Nigerian national with a travel ban, trying to leave Sri Lanka with a forged passport of Ghana was arrested by Immigration officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Police said.
The 38 year old Nigerian had arrived in Sri Lanka in 2019 and has three court cases pending against him in Sri Lanka.Two of the cases in the Negombo Magistrate courts and one in Mt Lavinia Magistrate courts.
A travel ban had been imposed on him from courts.
He had been in detention at the Mirihana centre where persons without valid visas are held and had escaped earlier.
After he was detained at the BIA his baggage was checked and officials detected and a detected a document which had a visa reportedly issued by the Sri Lanka’s High Commission in South Africa. But it was found to be false.
The Nigerian national’s passport was found hidden in his undergarments.
He was handed over to the CID for further investigations.
His arrest comes in the wake of a string of incidents where Nigerians have been involved in financial scams.
