With effect from November 01, 2025, carry bags popularly known as 'sili sili' bags will not be available free of charge.
The bags manufactured of Low Density polyethylene (LDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) will fall under this category.
Moreover, the charge for such bags must be clearly indicated on the bill.
Accordingly, the Consumer Affairs Authority has issued the relevant Gazette notification, which also stipulates that the price charged for shopping bags must be stated clearly at the respective business outlets.
This Gazette notification is issued under the powers vested in the Consumer Affairs Authority by Section 10(1)(a)(ii) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No.9 of 2023.
And the purpose and intents of this rule, the term commonly referred to as 'Sili Sili Bags' shall describe shopping bags with handles of any dimension, used to carry purchased goods.
