A woman who performed witchcraft on a nine- year- old girl by caning, which eventually resulted in the girl’s death, and the mother who helped the woman in the Kanduboda area in the Biyagama police area have been arrested.
Police said the woman had claimed that she could cure the girl who has been reportedly “possessed by a devil” and had allegedly caned the girl for at least three days.
A neighbour who had heard the screams of the girl had informed the police emergency unit as well. However, when the girl was rushed to the hospital she had been pronounced dead.
