President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the Election Commission had not legally declared the Local Government elections.
Speaking in Parliament he said there is also a lack of funds to have an election.
“We have not postponed an election and there is no election to be postponed”, he added.
The President said there was no proper quorum to take a decision on holding elections.
He explained that he have given priority to rebuild the economy and pointed out there would be no country left.
“You can’t have a constitution without a nation. The first duty of the president is to protect the nation, and then to protect the constitution.”
