Probe on business-woman exposes more financial dealings

News

A probe into allegations against multi-million frauds committed by business woman Thilini Priyamali has exposed financial dealings with politicians, officials and popular personalities including actresses.

As investigations continue the woman already in custody is reportedly receiving preferential treatment at the prison while already a mobile phone has been taken from her custody.

A list of persons who reportedly had financial dealings has already come into the public domain while a series of photographs in which she posed with the ruling party as well as opposition politicians, police officials and other popular persons too have come out.

But, the list of those who have had financial dealings have been disputed, but police investigations are likely to clear the doubts.

The leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, MP Udaya Gammanpila was one of the first to deny the links with the businesswoman and has gone on to lodge a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department calling for a probe to check who had included his name in the list that has been made public.

Mr. Gammanpila claimed that the names included were those who criticised the government, while the names of those who steal large amounts of money and expend them all during voting times were not mentioned in the list, he added.

He also claimed that according to informal sources, the list was created by a Minister and a popular actor, claiming that the actual list of the politicians, businessmen and monks, who gave money to Thilina Priyamali is present with the Police.

“This list was released to divert the attention of the public from the real frauds and corruption”, Mr. Gammanpila added.

He also stated that he provided the CID with the phone numbers of the people who created the list, adding that the Police have to bring forth the law and question them.

“Social media must have some regulation to prevent misleading people. However, those who express the truth or their honest opinions should not be afraid to do so”, Mr. Gammanpila said.  The CID is already investigating eight complaints against the woman which run over Rs 2.5 billion.
