A protest to demand the immediate suspension of the survey work for fine sand mining in the coastal areas from Pulmodai to Nilaveli in Trincomalee on the arbitrary decision of the Head of Geology and Mining Department was held today.
A large number of local residents, representatives of the Maritime Industry and Fishery Association participated in the protest.
"Do not destroy, do not destroy, do not destroy natural resources", "Do not exploit, do not exploit people's livelihood", "Stop the arbitrary decision of GSMB chairman" “Do not destroy tourism", were among the slogans chanted.
The protestors also handed over a letter to Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretary Mr. K. Gunanathan, asking them to draw the attention of the President, the Eastern Governor and the District Secretary in this regard.
