At least sixteen individuals were arrested for engaging in light course fishing in the Eastern seas yesterday (22), the Navy said. The arrested persons were also charged for fishing without a valid license and for using unauthorized fishing nets, said the Navy.
The arrests were made following separate search operations that were carried out by the Navy in the sea areas of Nayaru and Alampil as well as the sea and lagoon areas of Kokilai in Pulmudei areas. Seven dinghies and unauthorized fishing gear were also found.
The suspects are residents of Puttalam, Kokilai, Padavi Sri Pura, Welioya, and Madurankuliya areas, from 22 to 44 years of age.
The 16 individuals with their equipment were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Mullaitivu and the Fisheries Inspector of Kuchchaweli for further legal action.
