Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today warned Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) MP Tissa Kuttiaarachchi for making derogatory statements of women and said that disciplinary action will be taken if the offence is repeated.
The speaker also apologized for the incident. This was after Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rohini Kumari Kaviratne who had complained about the remarks made by MP Kuttiaarachchi last week drawing reference to Ms Kaviratne. He had also referred to Ms Janani Premadasa, wife of opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.
After the Speaker’s ruling MP Kuttiaarachchi denied the allegation that he made any derogatory comments about the MP and called the MP to repeat the words.
Ms Kaviratne objected to the demand saying he was trying to get her to repeat the words.
Meanwhile, SJB MP Nalin Bandara called the MP to step down as he had told parliament last week that if it is proved that he made any derogatory comments he will resign.
Ruling female MPs also have condemned the remarks made by the MP.
