Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera has ordered to distribute all the stocks of TSP fertiliser the country received to farmers by April 10, before the start of Yala paddy cultivation season.
The commencing of fertiliser distribution started on Monday and the Ministry said over 10,000 metric tonnes of TSP has been distributed to agrarian service centres. Over 20,000 farmers have received the 994 metric tonnes within the first two days of distribution. A total of 1.2 million farmers are to receive the fertiliser.
Minister Amaraweera said the Treasury has allocated 2500 million rupees for the distribution of the fertiliser stock, though UNFAO and USAID provided the fertiliser to Sri Lanka for free.
He said Rs.6000 million has been spent to distribute 110,000 metric tonnes of urea fertiliser.
