Zoo’s Oldest crocodile ’’Cuban’’ dies

Cuban the oldest crocodile at the Dehiwela zoo died yesterday the Director General of the Zoo said.

He added that the zoo which has been living at the zoo during 1970’s and since have been living at the zoo.

Curator of the Dehiwala Zoological Garden’s Aquarium and Reptilium Sumedha Abeysinghe told the Sunday times that the crocodile stopped eating large pieces of meat. We even chopped the meat it was eating to small pieces to meat.

“She was slowing down as age has had its impact on her, she refused eating in her final days”, he said.

Female Cuban crocodile Crocodylus rhombifer named “Cuban” believed to be around was brought to Sri Lanka via a cargo ship.

He added the crocodile was reared by a gentleman and handed over to the zoo in early 1970’s and had been at the zoo ever since. He added however there was no proper paperwork of the owner at the time people kept animals considered wild as pets.

“Cuban is kind of like a grumpy old lady, she is old and has poor vision, however is one of the aggressive crocodiles at the zoo and she is eight feet long and weighs around 70 kilos.
