A9 records highest number of accidents: 117 killed

The highest number road accidents recorded in 2016 have occurred on the Kandy-Jaffna A9 Highway, records obtained from the Police Traffic Division show. The accidents have left 117 people dead. They include the 11 persons who were killed in the most recent accident that occurred in Chavakachcheri in Jaffna

The most number of accidents reported along the highway have occurred in the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya.

In a bid to minimize the number of road accidents, the Vavuniya Police recently launched special day and night time operations to apprehend motorists who violate road rules. In the first stage of these operations, police were able to detect 83 errant motorists. Three of them were found to be driving under the influence of liquor while the remaining 80 were caught for violating various road rules.

Police Traffic Division stated there are plans to expand the operation to all parts of the Northern Province.
