The Archaeological Department will strengthen laws to take action against those involved in vanadalising and disrespecting of archaeological sites.
Director General of the Archaeological Department Professor P.B. Mandawela said the existing laws against those who act in such a manner were not sufficient at all.
Accordingly, attention has been drawn towards increasing the penalty and the fine for these offences.
"Several efforts to make people aware that they should avoid destroying such prominent sites, have proved futile" Prof. Mandawela lamented at a recent media briefing.
He also pointed out that illegal excavations are also taking place to obtain artifacts from such sites.
