The Sri Lanka Army yesterday (Dec 29) conducted an island-wide beach clean-up project in a bid to raise awareness on the ill-effects of polluting water bodies.
More than 2300 troops, civil society members, and volunteers took part in the campaign that had been organised in collaboration with the Marine Environmental Protection Authority.
Army Commander Major General Shavendra Silva flagged off the project at the Crow Island beach in Mattakuliya.
Maj. Gen. Silva had urged the people living along the banks of the Kelani river to abstain from polluting the water with non-degradable items such as plastic bottles into the river.
