A carbon tax will be imposed on all vehicles except electric cars from January 1 this year, the Commissoner General of Motor Traffic said today (Jan 09).
The carbon tax was first proposed under the Monetary Law Act in 2017, Commissioner General A.H.K. Jagath Chandrasiri said.
He explained that vehicles with a manufacturing date of less than five years will be charged a tax of 25 cents per cubic meter while vehicles with a manufacturing date between five and 10 years will be charged a 50 cent tax per cubic meter.
Further, Mr. Chandrasiri said that vehicle owners will have to pay the tax while obtaining the revenue license.
The tax will not be imposed on those who obtained their revenue licenses this year, the Commissioner General added.
