Eight new cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) have been identified today (18) Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said a short while ago.
Addressing a media briefing, she stated that the eight new cases includes three returnees from Italy, one who returned from India as well as three local tour guides who worked with tourist groups from the UK.
The minister however, stated that about 95% of the cases identified so far were those who had returned from countries that had a COVID-19 outbreak. She added that local transmission was still at a minimal level.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country has now reached 50.
A total of 212 persons are now under observation in hospitals.
