Eight persons were taken into custody by Naval personnel for engaging in illegal fishing in Upparu area, Trincomalee yesterday, Navy said.
A group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during a search conducted in Upparu area, apprehended these 08 suspects for engaging in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets. Along with the suspects a dinghy, an outboard motor (OBM), an unauthorized fishing net and 15kg of illegally caught fish were taken into naval custody. The suspects are residents of Kinniya and Waththala areas from 20 to 48 years of age.
The 08 suspects along with the dinghy, OBM, unauthorized net and other fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Trincomalee for onward action.
