The relatives of 17 Srilankan fishermen in Myanmar jailed for illegal poaching met the Secretary to the Fisheries ministry today to urge authorities for a early release of fishermen.
The fishermen from Trincomallee and Kudawela, in Matara areas were taken in to custody by the Myanmar authorities on charge of illegal poaching in October last year.
Secretary to the Fisheries Ministry Nimal Hettiarachchi met the relatives and assured them that the government is still working through its diplomatic channels with the Myanmar authorities to secure an early release of the fishermen.
Fisheries minister Joseph Micheal Perera also spoke to the family relatives over the telephone and promised that the government has taken necessary steps with the Srilankan embassy in Myanmar to release them.
