Fourteen Chinese nationals breach visa regulations; sentenced to a year in jail

Fourteen Chinese nationals have been sentenced to a year of mandatory imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 each after they were found guilty of being employed on a tourist visa.

The sentence was passed when the suspects were produced before Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunuwela today (Mar 14).

Magistrate Kekunuwela ordered that the suspects serve an additional mandatory sentence of one month in the event that they failed to pay the fine.

While delivering the verdict, the magistrate had also instructed Emigration officials to transfer the suspects to the Mirihana Detention Centre after having completed their jail terms in order to be deported to their country.

The suspects who were identified as construction workers  had breached visa regulations by using tourist visas while being employed at a building construction site in Galle.
