FR filed at SC seeking relief for Easter Sunday terror attack victims

News

A fundamental rights (FR) petition has been filed at the Supreme Court seeking compensation for those who were killed or injured in the Easter Sunday attacks which went unprevented due to the negligence of officials.

The petition has been filed by Sunil Perera, a resident of Ratmalana, who named the President, Prime Minister, the IGP, Acting IGP, former Defence Secretary and the current Defence Secretary as respondents to the petition.

The petitioner has sought that the families of those who lost their lives in the deadly attacks must be granted Rs 10 million while the injured must be granted Rs 50 million as compensation.

In the petition, Mr. Perera notes that the recent attack was similar to that of the Dehiwela Railway station blast which claimed the life of his wife in 2008. He also points out that the petition has been filed to remind that such negligent acts by officials must not recur in future,

Mr. Perera, in his petition, argued that the respondents including the IGP, and the Defence Secretary had failed in their duty by not preventing the attacks from occuring.
