The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has been instructed by the Inspector General of Police N K Ilangakoon to investigate into the recent reports of illegal kidney transplant operations carried out at several private hospitals in the country, police said.
Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Maheepala on Saturday requested IGP Ilangakoon to initiate prompt investigation into the matter. The Health Ministry appointed two committees, one including 3 members and the other containing 5 members, to conduct investigations .
Subsequently, the Health Ministry issued a circular instructing all state and private hospitals to suspend kidney surgeries performed on foreign nationals. The racket was revealed through Indian media reports last week, when a suspect was arrested over the racket in India who is suspected of facilitating 60 kidney transplants. Reports also revealed that all donors and recipients were from India and transplants took place in four local hospitals.
