The necessary laws to arrest terrorists must be passed before the Emergency Regulations are lifted, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said today (May 30).
Speaking in Ampara, the Prime Minister said that the Attorney General has also been notified regarding the need to formulate new laws. The laws in Europe will be studied before preparing the relevant laws, he said.
While emphasising the importance of restructuring laws, Mr. Wickremesinghe pointed out that a new mechanism must be set-up to defeat the IS terrorist group in a similar way to the laws which were introduced to defeat the LTTE.
He also noted that an information database must be complied to assist in defeating terrorism since the modes of obtaining information during the period of the LTTE was not apt to the current situation.
