Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya today strongly refuted allegations floating around social media over the delay in releasing results of the 2018 Local Government Election.
Speaking at a special media briefing this morning, Mr Deshapriya accepted personal responsibility for the delay in releasing results to the media and expressed regret for what happened. However, he maintained that most people knew results of their individual wards by about 8.30am on Sunday.
While there was no delay in releasing results in individual wards, there was a delay in those results being conveyed to the media and the wider public, he acknowledged.
The Elections Commission had earlier planned to upload results of each local government body after calculating results from their respective wards. This however, could not be done due to technical issues that came up when entering data from individual wards into its computer model, Mr Deshapriya explained.
