Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a special statement has cited three main dangers that the country is faced with following his defeat at the Presidential polls in 2015.
The three dangers as pointed out by Mr. Rajapaksa were the possible collapse of the economy at any moment, the breaking down of the government mechanism following the 19th amendment and the danger of the proposed new constitution.
The former President said the UNP government since 2015 had obtained loans equivalent to 50 percent of the total national debt that existed at the time of his defeat. He added that the rupee has depreciated by Rs 53 over the last four months against the US dollar.
Mr. Rajapaksa further elaborated by saying that the average growth rate which was 7.4 percent during his tenure as President had dropped to three percent in the recent past.
Further, he added that he country is faced with the threat of the entire government system collapsing due to the 19th amendment.
He said that there was no provision to dissolve Parliament before the completion of its term even when the government repeatedly loses the budge vote.
Explaining the threat of the new constitution, the Opposition Leader said that the draft constitution poses the threat of dividing the country into nine semi-independent federal units.
Former President Rajapaksa signed off by stating that it was only his political alliance that could prevent these dangers from becoming a reality.
