A new traffic plan will come into effect from April 22 for all schools in Colombo in order to ease traffic congestion.
The plan has been drafted under the instructions of Western Province Governor Azath Salley and would come into effect following the re-opening of schools after the vacation for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
According to the new plan, school vehicles will be able to stop near schools to drop and pick up students for a duration of only three minutes, Mr. Salley said.
The pilot project of the new plan would cover schools such as Thurstan College, Royal College D.S Senanayake College, St. Peters College, Muslim Ladies College - Bambalapitiya, Hindu College, Ladies College, Ananda College, Nalanda College, Musaeus College and Clifton Girls’ College.
Meanwhile, Governor Salley has said that talks will be held with Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam in order to implement the new traffic plan in four stages.
The Moratuwa University, Traffic Department, Colombo Municipal Council, (CMC) and the police have assisted in preparing the special traffic plan, the Governor's office said.
This plan is expected to be applied to British School, Lyceum International School and Anula Girls’ School Nugeogoda in future.
