One person was killed and four others injured after a collision between a car and a lorry in the Kiula area in Hungama at about 1.30am today.
Five persons who sustained injuries in the crash were admitted to the Hambantota and Tangalle hospitals. However, one of those being treated at the Tangalle hospital later succumbed to his injuries.
Police identified the deceased as a 39-year-old father of three from Bundala in Hambantota. He was working as a teacher at the Debarawewa Maha Vidyalaya in Tissamaharama, police added. He had also been the driver of the car.
The car had been carrying a group of persons from Bundala who were returning from Colombo after attending the Colombo International Book Fair. The lorry had been transporting vegetables from Bandarawela to Colombo.
According to Hungama police, the occupants of the vehicle consisted of the father, mother, their three children and another woman.
The lorry driver has been taken into police custody. Investigations are ongoing.
