Over 300 houses suffered damage last evening (15) after severe winds affected Puttalam and surrounding areas, the Puttalam Disaster Management Unit confirmed.
The winds tore through Anamaduwa, Puttalam, Karuwalagaswewa and Nawagaththegama areas around 4.00pm, causing much damage and destruction.
Large trees were uprooted by the winds. Some 15, 000 households in about 40 villages throughout the district lost power after falling trees and branches damaged powerlines.
Local authorities said they had identified that about 300 houses had suffered damage due to the winds, but said the numbers are likely to rise.
Government officials are taking steps to provide relief to those who had been affected.
