Parliament was suspended a short while ago by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya after heated exchanges between government and joint opposition group MPs over the ongoing strike by workers of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
The angry exchange of words came soon after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made a statement to Parliament on the strike in which he said the government would not give into unreasonable demands but would work for the good of the public at large.
He said the Government was willing to discuss with trade unions on any issue and safeguard their democratic rights but would not tolerate those who try to destroy law and order in the country.
