The decision has been made following a discussion between Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera and representatives from the Ceylon Distillery Corporation and the Excise Commissioner’s Department.
“The Minister said that if breweries do not take action to prevent the implementation of this decision, action will be taken to ban the quarter bottles in time,” the Ministry said in a press release.
“Though initially it was planned to ban the use due to illegal disposing causing greater environmental damage, this decision was taken considering requests from manufacturers on the demand,” the Ministry further added.
The Ministry said at present the annual production is about 120 million bottles with 18-20 million bottles used for arrack. About 60 percent are proven to be non-recyclable.
