The cabinet has directed the Attorney General (AG) department to review the legal procedures pertaining the prosecution of Indian fishermen for poaching with the view of imposing heavy penalties under the fisheries act, Supreme Court was told today.
When a petition filed by three fishermen cooperative leaders was taken up today, the state attorney informed the courts that the cabinet had informed the AG’s department to implement the Fisheries Foreign Vessels Act of 1979 with in six weeks.
The petitioner’s lawyers told the courts they would too make some recommendations to the AG department on implementing the Fisheries Act. Chandra Jayasundara along with Chinthaka Fernando appeared for the petitioner. The case will be taken up for hearing on March 29.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to vacate his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo this morning, a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) source said.
The Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill was passed by a majority of 150 in parliament today. However the opposition MP’s were absent during the voting.
