President Maithripala Sirisena ordered to take immediate action and effective steps to prevent gold smuggling. The decision was taken at a special discussion on the topic of preventing the gold smuggling yesterday at Presidential Secretariat.
The Tri Forces and the Police have revealed that the gold purchased at the auctions held by the State and private banks are being exported from Sri Lanka in a mega scale in illegal ways.
He also advised the Central Bank as well as the State and private banks to prepare systematized documentation on the auctions the respective banks held and a decision was taken to implement a legal, practical programme to prevent gold smuggling with the participation of Attorney-General’s Department, Tri Forces and the Police.
Heads of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, officials of the Tri Forces and the Police, officers of the Attorney-General’s Department as well as the State and private banks participated in the discussion.
