President Maithripala Sirisena has reiterated that measures would be taken to impose the death penalty on drug traffickers In order to protect the future generations of the country.
Issuing a press release, the President's media division said that the President had made these remarks during a special discussion on the prevention of drugs at the Presidential Secretariat today (Dec 10).
President Sirisena had admitted that there was a delay in implementation of the sentence since the relevant authorities had not submitted the list of inmates who will receive the punishment, while also adding that an inquiry will be carried out in this regard.
He had stressed that measures will not be taken to weaken the laws pertaining to those who have been convicted for drug trafficking. The President had also said that necessary action would be taken to resolve the issues face by police officers while carrying out drug busts.
The discussion was attended by Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya, President's secretary Udaya R. Senaviratne, Defense secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara.
