A protest was held in Hatton today (Jul 24) to protest against alleged attempts to prevent increments being made to the daily wages of estate workers.
Protestors claimed that Plantations Minister Navin Dissanayake had attempted to interrupt the process of increasing the daily wages of estate workers by Rs 50.
Members of the Ceylon Workers Congress, the general public, and activists took part in the protest. They had pointed out that moves were afoot to prevent the increment despite cabinet approval being granted in this regard.
Minor traffic congestion had been reported along the Hatton – Colombo and Hatton – Nuwara Eliya main roads while the protest was underway at around 3 pm.
In March this year, the government announced that it would allocate Rs 1.2 billion in order to implement the wages increase of estate workers.
