The Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry has ended its investigation into match fixing allegations regarding the 2011 Cricket World Cup final.
SIU sources stated that the unit will wrap up its probe and forward a report to the Secretary to the Sports Ministry.
The decision to end the probe comes after investigators concluded that there was "no evidence" to back up claims made by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the 2011 World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India had been fixed.
The SIU questioned several former and current players over the claims made by the former Sports Minister. Those questioned included World Cup winner and former Chairman of Selectors Aravinda De Silva, former Captain Kumar Sangakkara and batsman Upul Tharanga.
Former Captain Mahela Jayawardena had earlier been summoned to give a statement today (3) concerning the allegations, but the SIU had later informed him not to come today and that he will be given a later date. However, the former captain arrived at the SIU today and said he wanted to refute certain media reports that he had informed the SIU that he could not appear before it today. He noted that he came after informing SIU officials that he wanted to refute those reports and note that it was the SIU which informed him not to come and give a statement.
