Sixteen students of the Kelaniya University have been arrested for removing CCTV cameras installed within the university, Police said.
Police initially arrested a monk who led the group along with three students and thereatter the remaining surrendered to the Kiribathgoda Police.
The students had removed the cameras claiming that authorities were making use of the cameras to monitor their activities and suppress them, but authorities denied the claim.
But, University sources said that one of the objectives in installing the cameras was to prevent ragging.
Higher Education Ministry officials said the Police may file charges under the Public Properties Act.
