A special team has been deployed to sanitize the landfill site in Aruwakkalu, Puttalam to control the stench emanating from it, a senior Ministry official said.
Nihal Rupasinghe, the Megapolis Ministry's Secretary said that the site would be sanitised for a week by spraying a chemical. This was after area residents staged a protest yesterday (Oct 1).
Residents staged a 11-hour protest blocking the entry of garbage trucks carrying waste from Colombo, complaining that dumping waste at the site could affect their health.
However, Mr. Rupasinghe said that the bad odour had been emanating due to the rains experienced recently. He said that the dumping of garbage at the site would be halted until completion of the sterilisation process.
