An individual was arrested for stabbing a policeman after he was caught with 230.6 grams of cannabis yesterday (Mar 18).
The incident had taken place in Gokarella when the policeman was about to arrest the suspect.
However, the suspect was arrested by another policeman who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident. A search on the suspect led to the discovery of a handgrenade which was in his possession.
The suspect who attempted to flee the area following the stabbing has been identified as a 22-year old resident of Ibbagamuwa, Bakmeegolla by the name of M.I.M. Azeez.
The police officer who was stabbed by the suspect is currently receiving treatment at the Kurunegala hospital.
Police said that the suspect will be produced before the Kurunegala Magistrates Court today.
