Three arrested for attacking Forest Department officers

Three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the assault of two Forest Department officers in Dharmapuram, Kilinochchi. 

Police Headquarters said, in the incident which took place on May 1, the officers from the Forest Department's Kilinochchi office had arrested three persons who were allegedly engaged in illegal sand mining in the Kalaru Forest Reserve using a tractor. They were returning along with the suspects and the tractor when they had allegedly been set upon by another group of individuals who assaulted the Forest Officers and freed the suspects in their custody. 

Acting on a complaint made by the officers to the Dharmapuram Police Station, police conducted investigations and arrested one alleged assailant as well as two of the suspects who had been freed by the assailants.

The suspects are due to be produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate's Court. Dharmapuram Police are conducting further investigations to arrest several suspects who remain at large as well as the tractor used for illegal sandmining.
