A motion to appoint a Committee of Inquiry (CoI) for the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon was passed in Parliament a short while ago today. 151 members voted in favour of this motion.
The motion seeks to consider the removal of IGP Tennakoon based on allegations of misconduct and abuse of power. The charges relate to his arrest in connection with a shooting incident in Weligama, followed by his evasion of arrest for over two weeks.
The motion, signed by 115 members, was handed over to the Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, on 25 March.
The resolution, submitted under Section 5 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act No. 5 of 2002, calls for an inquiry into the IGP’s actions. Section 5 of the Act outlines the procedure for the removal of officers holding positions such as the IGP.
