Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) marked a historic milestone today by laying the foundation stone for the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium (JICS) in Mandaitivu, Jaffna. The event was graced by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, alongside Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, at the invitation of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The Jaffna International Cricket Stadium will become Sri Lanka’s seventh international cricket venue and the fifth to be fitted with floodlights. The ground, spread across 48 acres, will feature 10 centre wickets and boundaries stretching up to 80 metres, surpassing international standards. Designed to host 40,000 spectators, the venue aims to become a premier destination for cricket in the Northern Province.
The project is part of SLC’s ambitious plan to build a 138-acre Sports City in Jaffna, which will include a swimming pool complex, a multi-sport indoor arena, luxury hotels, restaurants, a shopping mall and entertainment facilities.
Officials said the stadium will play a pivotal role in SLC’s National Pathway Program, ensuring equal opportunities for young cricketers across the island to progress to the highest levels of the game.
