Cricket: Lanka Cavaliers beat MCA Committee by 8 wickets

Sport

The Tyrone de Silva Challenge Trophy shifted to a new location after a lapse of 6 years, where Lanka Cavaliers scored an easy 8-wicket victory over MCA Committee in the 14th Annual Cricket Encounter 2017 at the MCA ground.

John Keells veteran cricketer, Ravi Subasinghe with an intelligent spell of bowling was the architect of the win, when he rattled the MCA batsmen to capture 4 for 17.

MCA won the toss and decided to bat first on their green home wicket and a heavy outfield.

They lost their openers, P.K. Abeygunasekera and Mahesh de Alwis at 11 and 21, falling to Peterite paceman, Riaz Farouk (3-0-20-2) .

MCA encountered more problems when their Academy Head Coach, Namal Seneviratne (12) was run out off a direct hit from Niranjan Dabare (28 for 3).

Mahesh Wijewardene (18) and Duminda Pinto (43 in 35 balls with 3 sixes and 4 fours) held the fort for awhile, but when Ravi Subasinghe went into action, it was all over for MCA – shot out for 102 in 17 overs.

Lanka Cavaliers led by Basil Jayawardena for the first time, shed little sweat on reaching their target in 14.1 overs, losing only 2 wickets, with Varuna Waragoda (30), Basil Jayawardena (32) and new recruit, Sanjaya Attanayake (25 not out), being very comfortable with the MCA bowlers.

The four special awards went to Lanka Cavaliers' Ravi Subasinghe (Best Bowler and Man of the Match), Lanka Cavaliers' Niranjan Dabare (Best Fielder) and MCA's Duminda Pinto (Best Batsman).

Former MCA President Tyrone de Silva, who inaugurated the series during his tenure, by donating the trophy in 2004, was the Chief Guest and gave away the Challenge Trophy.

The other presenters were, MCA President Niran Mahawatte, MCA Snr. VP Roshan Iddamalgoda and former MCA President Chris Obeysekere.

MCA Committee 102 (17) (Duminda Pinto 43, Mahesh Wijewardene 18, Namal Seneviratne 12; Ravi Subasinghe 4/17, Riaz Farook 2/20)

Lanka Cavaliers 105 for 2 (14.1) (Basil JAyawardena 32, Varuna Waragoda 30, Sanjaya Attanayake 25 not out, Asanga Perera 15 not out)
