Unconfirmed sources close to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) reveal that Sri Lanka ODI skipper Upul Tharanga has been banned for two matches by the ICC for maintaining a slow over rate during the second game against India at Pallekele on Thursday (24).
Sri Lanka is likely call in Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal and middle-order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne in to the ODI squad as unconfirmed reports say that middle-order batsman Chamara Kapugedara will take over Tharanga as skipper for the upcoming two games.
It is also understood that Sri Lanka opener Danushka Gunathilaka will be ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series after injuring his shoulder while fielding.
Sri Lanka will most probably open with Thirimanne as Chandimal is slotted to take Tharanga's place in the batting order.
According to Match Referee Andy Pycroft, Sri Lanka were found three overs short soon after India bounced back to record a sensational win.
This is the second occasion that Tharanga faces a two-match ban by the ICC following the Champions Trophy for a similar offence after the match against South Africa in England.
India currently lead the 5-match ODI series 2-0 against Sri Lanka.
