Opener Martin Guptill made 156 as New Zealand piled up 409-8 at stumps on Day 1 in the first Test against Sri Lanka which began in Dunedin, New Zealand today (10).
Put into bat first New Zealand lost their first wicket of Tom Latham at 56 but a 173-run partnership for the second wicket between Guptill and Kane Williamson made the visitors a worried lot.
Guptill went on to score his third century and faced 234 deliveries during his knock which also included 21 boundaries.
Williamson made 88 off 123 deliveries hitting 12 boundaries before skipper Brendon McCullum came in to hit a smashing 75 off just 57 deliveries.
McCullum his 13 fours and the only six of the New Zealand innings.
Doug Bracewell was unbeaten on 32 when stumps were drawn.
Fast bowlers Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep and Dushmantha Chameera took two wickets each while Milinda Siriwardana and Angelo Mathews claimed a wicket each.
Udara Jayasundera made his Test debut for Sri Lanka.
